Half Marathon Training…A Long Wog

This morning I will adventure out on an 11 mile training wog. I always think at 11 miles, should we be just going another 2.2 and having a party at the end, but never the less it’s the beauty of training. The longer mileage, they always suggest trying out all of the things you’ll be doing on actual race day, fuel hydration, shoes, socks, music, etc. I thought I’d share my favorite hydration and fuel.

 

Fuel

I’ve had a couple mishaps with fuel making my stomach upset, I’ve also determined my love of caffeine is not true when I am mid-race. So, I stick to caffeine-free. I love Clif Shot Bloks. I cut the tubs in half and put it in my pack, making for easy pop in your mouth on the go-ness. My favorite flavors are mountain berry and cran-razz.

Hydration

For the longest time I only drank water. I didn’t buy in to the whole you needed something in your water thing, until I thought okay what if it improved how I felt in the last 4 miles. So, this year I decided to try some. I have never been good with Gatorade or high sugar drinks, they make me nauseous. I’ve heard Nuun, but never tried it. I tried grape and it was okay, but they recently released watermelon and my world has been flipped upside down! I love it! It has helped with my performance and tastes absolutely delicious! The fact that they refer to at limited edition worries me. I just bought another 4 tubes at REI this weekend.

The other part of hydration is how to carry it. I started out with a hand carry bottle, but as I walk and swing my arms I started realizing how much it bulled at my shoulder, and the fact that I sloshed water all over the place. I couldn’t have the luck of using a bottle that I could get open, or closed. My dad is a cyclist, and always waxed poetic about the Camelbak Podium bottles. Then I discovered their Delaney back that incorporated pack and Podium. Oh, it came in pink. SOLD! I’ve really enjoyed it, although I’ve seen an improved one that definitely expands on it’s awesomeness.

This year during training I also tried the Camelbak Arc 2. I do think it’s great for a small bottle pack, the trouble is the way I am shaped it either wants to be low and creep down when I pick up speed or be up around my bra and that is uncomfortable. Maybe, as I lose weight I’ll be able to comfortably use this one more.

Build Me Up Buttercup!

One of the things I am very lucky to have is support. My family is super supportive of my passion for fitness, losing weight, and my fanatical love of half marathons.

My mom has accompanied me on every half marathon (even when I put her in matching costumes) and personal training session. My husband has been supportive of all my training, helping roll out my muscles, and he has embraced our changed diet.

In the early years of me trying to change, I had toxic friends around me. I know I was the “fat friend.” The one they always thought well at least I’m not THAT big.  Unfortunately, it took too long to realize they weren’t ever going to get on board with me changing. They were the people who insisted you needed to eat ice cream, cake, and candy because they wanted to. When I got them out of my life, it was amazing how much easier it was for me to workout and stick to my plan.

I believe a great support system is one of those keys to successful weight loss. If you feel everyone is constantly trying to sabotage you, or talk you out of the workout, it’s going to be harder to succeed.

This is my mom and I after out latest half marathon, Hop Hop Half, it was Easter themed and had brunch with mimosas at the end. The skirts and hats were made by me, the sassy coordinating tops bought at the fabu Target!

Waiting to Workout

That’s my mini dachshund, Martini. She doesn’t love waiting and being asked to be patient. Especially, when I tell her she can have a photo shoot to pass the time.

In a ideal world, I would get up in the morning and then continue to work. Sadly, my world is far from ideal. I commute to work, get there by 7:30am, and suffer horrible insomnia. So, after trying to force the morning workout I gave up, I always hope to get at least 6 hours sleep.

This in turn leads me to evening workouts. Which as the days get longer isn’t so bad. The exception is my water aerobics class that isn’t offered till 7:15pm. I do enjoy it! It gives me a high energy, low impact workout, which my beat up feet and calves need. Along with being a fun social outing. Normally I done with a wog or personal training by 6pm, but on Tuesday and Thursdays I wait for the late hour of the pool.

I’m a Fan Friday

I love to read. I love to read fun blogs, especially about fitness, weight loss, and girly stuff. Oh heck, I read them on technology too. I’m a bit of an information junkie. Which would be one of the reasons I wear a Bodymedia Link, Polar heart rate monitor, and a Nike + when I am working out. More information = better chance of success for me.

I stumbled upon Jenny’s facebook page a month back, and was hooked with her spirit. The woman has made me not think cross fit is the terrifying beast I’ve made it out to be, and just overall fitspirational!

One Challenge at a Time

Last night’s workout did change how I felt, in a positive way. My trainer challenged me with an exercise I tried once before. I love things like this. I found a video of the exercise, except my trainer wanted me to do a squat in between each jump.

At first I kept stepping off each time I’d do a 180 degree jump, but I just kept at it. She wanted me to do 12 in a row, I probably did 24 or more, but I finally stopped letting my mind take over and did the 12 in a row. After I completed them, my mom chimed in “I missed it do it again.” I love things like that! when you push yourself to let your mind stop controlling and you get to experience how far your fitness level has come. When I started this 4 years ago, I didn’t know what a Bosu ball was, now I love it!

When I started, all I did was get on the treadmill and walk. That was great! Slowly I increased the incline. Then a friend wanted me do try squats and lunges. I cursed her for a few days as I couldn’t sit in a chair or a toilet easily. We have all been there…and if you haven’t, maybe one day you will.

Tonight after work, I join my mom and the other characters at the pool for high intensity water aerobics. The thought of being in a swimsuit terrified my at first, but these lovely ladies make it all tolerable.

Wednesday Wog

It isn’t always sunshine and unicorns in the world of weight loss. We all wish we’d post consistent 2lbs a week weight losses, and increased muscle gain.

Unfortunately, that isn’t reality. This week has been one of our lovely bi-polar weather weeks in Oregon, so I think that doesn’t help me. It’s sunny YAY! Let’s go out and wog! Wait….It’s starting to monsoon outside, guess I’ll wait.  I just love doing my workouts outside so much better than inside. In theory, the fresh air doesn’t make me feel as sweaty!

Oh well stop complaining Kimberly! Tonight I will be working out with my trainer with my mom. It always tires me out in a fabulous way, and I know as grouchy as I feel right now after the workout I will feel better.

My Heart is with Boston

I get really excited for the Boston Marathon, I love to follow the leader board, tracking Kara and Shalane today. I logged in as soon as I got to work this morning, looking at paces following coverage. Does it blow anyone else’s mind how fast these people run? I mean consistent 10mph for 2:30!!! So impressive!

My husband and I have some friends who are there running, so I check in on them also.

Then my husband texts me “There has been an explosion in Boston”

I Google it, my heart hurts. Not only do these runners train, qualify, and put there hearts and soles/souls into this race, but so does the city of Boston. Why would you so senselessly hurt all of these people?
Honestly, I can’t stop reading, I don’t know what will change, it just seems to keep getting worse and more gruesome.  People are already predicting how this will change racing for the future. Right now, I just want peace, love, and comfort to be with everyone who is in Boston. Their loved ones who are elsewhere wondering who they are, bring them peace.

Hug someone you love and remember something you love about Boston tonight!

First Post on Wog This Way!

Hello Out There

My name is Kimbery, and I am another person traversing the Candyland board of weight loss and fitness. It’s been life changing for me, and I’d love to share what I’ve learned, and continue to learn on the way.

To explain the title of this site, it’s a term I use for my mash up of walking and jogging. While I dream of running fast like Kara Goucher, it hasn’t happened yet. That’s okay with me I wog along, happy to be moving. Although occasionally I do sprint for the finish line of a half marathon, it’s my Olympic moment in my mind.
